Duet For Child Soldiers
This is a little embarrassing, but bear with me. Romeo Dallaire was kind enough to come to London on Sunday evening November 7th to speak at a fundraiser for our NGO - Canadian Aid For Southern Sudan. We've been employing former child soldiers in south Sudan to assist us with the building of schools and overseeing our numerous programs there. Romeo spoke of his Child Soldier Initiative - a worldwide effort to bring a halt to the use of child boys and girls as combatants and human shields in the carnage of war. His speaking was gripping, as he recounted some of his own encounters with child soldiers in Africa. For the last nine years we have held the concert, the key singer has been Denise Pelley - a wonderful and committed performer. She's coming with us to Sudan against this year for her fourth time. I was asked to join her in a duet involving two different songs - my first time singing in 20 years. I was to be the voice of a child soldier praying to be freed and Denise, playing the mother, sang the beautiful "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. I include it on this blog, embarrassing though it is, as a tribute to Romeo and his remarkable work around the world. He wants Canada to get back out into the world again and make the kind of difference it is capable of. We have but to follow his fine example.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pwq8021b9Y&fs=1&hl=en_US]
