Monday, June 2, 2008 A community advocate in London through work at the
London Food Bank; a fundraising veteran of numerous disaster relief crises; a
volunteer activist in Rwanda, Iraq, Somalia, Guatemala and Sudan; and, a
Western alumna.
Jane Roy These are only a few of the accomplishments
that made Jane Roy an obvious choice for Huron University College’s 2008
Medal of Distinction Award. Roy will receive her award June 9 at Huron’s
celebration of graduates, just prior to Convocation ceremonies at Alumni
Hall.
Along with her husband, Glen Pearson, Roy has established a
charitable organization called Canadian Aid for Southern Sudan. Her most
recent efforts in Sudan involve freeing child slaves, building schools,
developing a women’s literacy program and an aid program that helps women set
up their own business.
Closer to home, Roy is the Assistant Director
of the London Food Bank and during her 18 years with the organization has
been remarkably successful at developing the food bank’s profile in the
community. She works tirelessly to promote the mandate of the organization
including assisting those who struggle to make ends meet and working with
other agencies in the community that assist those in need.
Roy has
served as Chairperson of the Ontario Association of Food Banks, as a member
of London’s Round Table on the Environment and Economy, and as a key member
of the Mayor’s Anti-Poverty Task Force.
She was recently honoured with
an Alumni Awards of Merit Community Service Award from Western for
spearheading the London Food Bank, and advocacy on poverty and civil strife
issues.
