Five years of conflict is a lifetime for children, say the Canadian
politicians, musicians and activists who are uniting to fight for the children
of Darfur
Marketwire
TORONTO, ONTARIO-- Hundreds of activists, including MP Glen Pearson, Canadian
artists Low Level Flight, and Tim Baker from Hey Rosetta!, will gather at
Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday, April 13th, to highlight the plight of
children in the Darfur genocide as part of the 5th Global Day for Darfur.
Led internationally by Globe for Darfur (www.globefordarfur.org) and
locally by STAND Canada (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur,
(www.standcanada.org) and Project Equity, the Global Day for Darfur brings
together activists and artists from across the globe to demand an end to the
genocide in Darfur. This year's day focuses on children - an often neglected
victim of armed conflict.
Since the genocide began 5 years ago, over 1
million children have been tortured, raped, wounded, displaced, and/or
traumatized. UNICEF reported in their Child Alert Report that "The children
of Darfur have little prospect of a decent, independent future for
themselves...(as the majority of them) live beyond the reach of current
international relief efforts, leaving them exposed to malnutrition, illness,
violence and fear."
What: Toronto's Day for Darfur, hosted by STAND
Canada and Project Equity, is an interactive day that brings together
speakers, musicians and activists to raise awareness about the plight of
children in the Darfur genocide. Speakers include Liberal MP Glen Pearson,
Sergeant Debbie Bodkin and Ismail Adam; a representative from the Darfuri
Association. Low Level Flight (Former Canadian-Idol Ryan Malcom's band), Tim
Baker from the indie-rock band Hey Rosetta! and Toronto-based
singer-songwriter Dylan Murray will entertain the crowd.
When: Sunday,
April 13th, 2008
Time: 1-3:30 pm
